From a social reformer to an author: Life of Savitri Bai Phule

An inspiration

In today’s era where “women” is word to talk about. Talks range from empowerment to mentality, from hiding to disclosing, from molestation to prostitution and many more. Sometimes, we call the people as “feminists”, but all of them are not “feminists”.

One such feminist was SAVITRI BAI PHULE, a girl child who was married only when she was 9 with 12 year old boy JOYTIRAO PHULE. Irony is today, a 9 year old child doesn’t even know their subjects fully and she got married at that age!

She was a social reformer, founder of the first women school in Pune, a poet (who realized the significance of writing and conveying her thoughts), a doctor (who commenced a clinic for treating bubonic plague near Pune in 1897), an activist who fought for the rights of women, an author, a mother of an adopted child, she also fought against casteism, untouchables practice which was prevalent in India.

Her efforts got recognition at national level and University of Pune has been renamed as “Savitri Bai Phule University”.

Today is her birthday; we pay our gratitude towards such an activist who lived a simple life but inspired many.
